Taekwondo Forms – Taegeuk is a supplementary book to Taekwondo Forms. Taekwondo Forms covers a lot of forms – 71 in total – but not all of them. There are a number of forms that are more obscure – practised by fewer people, with less written about them, and sometimes more variations. These forms merit their own texts, so that they can be examined in greater detail, and hopefully clarified.
Taekwondo Forms – Taegeuk looks at the Taegeuk series of forms – a series of three forms designed by Karate practitioners and later taught by Taekwondo practitioners. Like in Taekwondo Forms, the book contains a description of the movements of each form, as well as a discussion about the forms.
Why did you write it?
Taekwondo Forms documents a lot of forms, but not all of them. It would be good, over time, to document all of the forms known to exist in Taekwondo, in a similar style, and with a similar level of clarity. My aim is to do this through revisions of Taekwondo Forms, and by writing additional texts such as this one.
Is it for Changheon-yu (ITF) or Kukki-won (WTF / WT) students?
Neither and both. The Taegeuk forms are mainly practised by Cheongdo-kwan Taekwondo students – and students of any style that still uses forms imported from Karate. This book is particularly relevant to students of those styles. However, Kukki-won students sometimes practise a series of forms known as the Kibon forms, which are very similar to the Taegeuk forms, and which are discussed in this book. Finally, this book will be of interest to anyone in Changheon-yu Taekwondo who wants to see what the broader scene of Taekwondo forms looks like.
