The reason why accurate figures for this are not known is because of the difficulty of obtaining reliable statistics on Taekwondo practitioners. There are hundreds of Taekwondo organisations around the world – some large, with tens or hundreds of thousands of members, and some small, with only a few thousand or a few hundred members. There are also a number of independent schools, with perhaps only a few tens of practitioners in them. While most larger organisations keep records of their members, most of them do not publish this information. Furthermore, Taekwondo organisations have an incentive to give inaccurate information about how many members they have, as giving a higher number can make the organisation look more successful than it is. Thus, information that has been published is not necessarily reliable.
