Are weapons used in Taekwondo?

No – Taekwondo does not include any traditional weapons training.

Taekwondo uses hand and foot techniques to punch, strike, kick, and block against an opponent. It is an empty-handed martial art. Taekwondo focuses on blocking or deflecting an opponent’s attack, and attacking an opponent with powerful techniques to rapidly overpower them.

However, there are some martial arts schools that practise a mix of different martial arts, and will practise Taekwondo but also include some traditional weapons training – often traditional Okinawan weapons. Note that such classes are multi-disciplinary classes – Taekwondo on its own does not include any weapons training. (The word ‘Taekwondo’ literally means ‘the way of the foot and the fist’.)
